Well it's been a little while since I posted anything of me playing and today I received an mp3 of some music I did for a film. It seems to have turned out well, baring in mind it's just a cue really, so I thought I'd stick it on here!

If I remember it was to click and there were no edits, just straight through with the double bass player - the vibes and effects were on the track.

FILM CUE

Enjoy!

Dazz, I'll be honest because I know you won't take it personally.
I find that the tune itself (keys and bass) does not give you much to work with. It's slow paced and doesn't have too much variation in it. To be honest, I would have a hard time working out what I would play to this. My recommendation would be this:
Have you ever tried the same thing playing 16th notes on the hi-hat? I really think it would add a lot of spice to this. Regardless,
you did a great job on keeping the pace and adding some nice/simple fills. Too bad we can't listen to it along with the movie!

Man,

Is this the final mix? Where was it recorded? Who helped with the drum sounds?

The vibes player can't have been happy with his performance! It sounds like me playing on a keyboard with a bad vibes patch...drunk! Who was it?! Is there a little midi in there?

Nice drums though, cool arranging of the tune, especially the ending.

Cheers for the comments everyone.

Suspiria, we did do a take with 16s on the Hi Hat, but the composer wanted it fairly sparce and asked me to stick with 8's.

Groovemeister, it was recorded in a small studio in West London, I was in a tiny drum booth and I think there were just 2 overheads and one in the kick, so you get an 'overall' drum sound as opposed to beign close miked.

I would imagine that this is the final mix. The vibes were midi and you're right - they sound shite!!

Andy, it is for an independant film and I can't remember the name, let alone when it's out!! Sorry.

I know it's not the most inspiring bit of music and my part was fairly simple really as there will be dialogue underneath at some point. Just thought it would be mildly interesting to post this - I know we're not splitting the atom here!!

Thanks for clearing things up Dazzler. If you have a copy of the version with 16th notes lying around, don't hesitate to submit it.
Who cares if it's not revolutionary playing! I thought it was interesting enough just to get an idea of what other area (besides playing in a band) a drummer can work in.

Cheers Suspiria, you got the point! Not all the music we get hired to play is going to re-invent the wheel. Sometimes we are simply musical plumbers that get hired to do a job, read the dots and leave! If there IS an opportunity to be creative within this context (as in the fills with this piece) then great, but mostly you get hired to play a part well, hopefully in as few takes as possible!!

Yeah, I forgot the "limitations" you are probably frequently faced with in your work. It's sad don't you think? Time is money. Seems like you don't even get to put your heart and soul into things.

I jump at the opportunity to be, what is essentially 'meat'... gigs where i am there to just lay it down and get out. I feel lucky that i am the tool (in maybe more than one sense of the word! ) they use to bring whatever they are working on, to life.

I am in a musical... take that back, i JUST got hired to play in a musical and i just started charting out the tunes today. I am going to get finished full score in a few days when i meet with the MD/conductor... however, i wanted to be on top of it and write out full charts for myself. Now, this isn't really my type of music... it is, shall we say, a tad bit dated sounding for my taste, not to mention i don't do classical percussion too much. However, i do it regardless. After 8 hours in the coffee shop (i am in Seattle afterall) of tiresome charting, i thought about it. Now, not all of this is my cup of tea, but i am so very lucky to be doing this...i mean, think about it. Someone is using me to make their musical production come to life. They are saying, 'hey, you are good enough to help me get this vision out into the world for everyone to see'. I can't imagine more of a pay-off for years in the practice room than that. Sure, playing music you love is the best, but what about thinking how much of a privilage it is to be used by people to be the instrument that they use to bring their vision to completion.

I have played some stuff i would never listen to on my own, but i am blessed to be asked to help someone with their idea. Even in this musical i am doing, the music doesn't make me bounce off the walls, but the fact that someone is putting their vision in my hands, telling me they trust me to bring it though to completion... i can't think of a better gig than that.

Dazz just reminded me about that cause it is on the lines of his last post, so i thought i would share.

P.S. I didn't mention anything about the sound clip because i don't have speakers at work or else i would listen to Dazz's thing he posted... will check it out soon, interested to hear it
